Our Majestic God

Read Psalm 8

When I first moved to Arizona, I was struck by how clear I could see the stars in a lucent nighttime sky. The constellations were easy to find. At certain times of the year, planets such as Venus and Mars could be seen. It gave me a sense of both wonderment and reverence thinking how wonderfully creative God is.

When David wrote this Psalm, it’s possible he was looking up at the heavens stargazing. Amazed at the shining full moon, and the thousands of twinkling stars, he wrote these words in verse 3: When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers- the moon and stars you set in place.” He then continues with an interesting statement in verse 4: “what are mere mortals that you should care for them, human beings that you should care for them?” David being awed by the workmanship of God’s creation is fascinated that He would think of us, and even care for us. After all, compared to the vastness of all God created how important could man be?

We are created “a little lower than the angels” (as the NIV version says). At first glance, it may not look like anything of significance. However, one thing that distinguishes us from the heavenly beings is whose image we all are created in, God’s image. No other created thing God made, is.

We are the objects of God’s love and compassion. So much so that he sent his Son to the cross for us, securing our eternity with him. Do you know what else? He wouldn’t have it any other way. His plan has always included us. He involves us in His creation according to verse 6, “You gave them charge of everything you made…” We are created to have a purpose on this “big blue marble” we call earth.

Did you notice how David then ends this Psalm? The same way he started it. Giving God the glory and splendor he deserves and proclaiming the Lord of creation…is our Lord.
